Involvement in the Australian wine industry dates back to 1992. A qualified viticulturist with a Master’s degree in Wine Technology and Marketing, Ashley and his wife Holly purchased their first vineyard in Barmera, South Australia, in 2003.
Their vision was to grow and make wines from grape varieties best suited to Australia’s warm, dry climate. Traditional varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot soon made way for Mediterranean alternatives, including Nero d’Avola, Montepulciano, Tinta Barroca, Fiano and Vermentino — varieties that reflect Ashley’s forward-thinking approach to viticulture and winemaking.
While Ashley is widely associated with the Riverland through Ricca Terra Farms, he and his family have called the Barossa home for much of their lives. This connection inspired the creation of Vitis Vetus, a brand dedicated to celebrating the Barossa Valley’s heritage, old vines and distinctive character.
Vitis Vetus translates as old vine and showcases wines grown and made entirely in the Barossa Valley. Each wine reflects Ashley’s connection to the region and his appreciation for the history, character and individuality that old vines bring to the glass.
