2026 Bullets Before Cannonballs
Every new variety at Ricca Terra Farms starts as a bullet: a small trial plot we watch, wait and learn from before we commit. This wine is where we put that philosophy in the glass.
For 2026 we’ve changed up the blend, bringing together Tempranillo, Merlot and Shiraz from the Riverland and the Barossa.
The Story
Mythology has it that inexperienced sailors were defeated by enemy ships because their cannonballs missed the target. Those defeats could have been avoided if the cannonball’s trajectory had been calculated before it was fired. Experienced sailors did this by firing bullets first. A single bullet could never sink an enemy ship, but it showed them exactly how high and how wide to aim the cannonball, so that a fatal hit was assured.
At Ricca Terra Farms, we take the same “fire bullets before cannonballs” approach when planting new grape varieties.
Rather than mass planting a new variety and then learning how it behaves as a vine and as a wine, we plant small plots first. Then we watch, wait and learn: we fire bullets. When the right bullet is found, the cannonball is loaded and fired, and that variety joins the Ricca Terra Farms portfolio.
